Temple Zvartnots

Zvartnots Temple is located near Yerevan (20 km). The name in translation from ancient Armenian means "Temple of the Vigilant Angels." The temple was built under Catholicos Nerses III the Builder in 640-650, who planned to move his residence from Dvin to Vagharshapat (Echmiadzin). It was a three-tier round temple 49 meters high, consisting of three decreasing cylinders set on top of each other, crowned with a spherical cone, like a pyramid. The temple towered on the platform, around which there was a step pedestal, partially preserved.

Later, already at the beginning of the 20th century, a group of researchers discovered the ruins of an ancient temple, buried on the very roof under a layer of ground and sand. In 2000, the archaeological site and the ruins of the temple were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Today, the territory of Zvartnots has become an archaeological reserve and an open-air museum, where you can see numerous sculptural fragments of impressive size.
