Monastery Noravank

Noravank is a magnificent medieval monument located in breathtaking natural surroundings. It is known that this place was sacred in even more ancient times. Noravank Monastery was built in the 1200-1400s BC, where an old church stood. At the beginning of the Christian era, it was one of the most renowned religious, educational, and political centers.

Noravank was founded by Bishop Hovhannes, rector of the Vahanavank Monastery (near the town of Kapan), who transferred his episcopate here in 1205. The period of the highest prosperity for the monastery was the following two centuries during the reign of the Orbelian Royal Dynasty, which turned it into the religious and spiritual center of Syunik, establishing a clan crypt at the monastery.

In 1238 the monastery was plundered by the Mongols, but thanks to the truce between the Agha Khan and Prince Elikum Orbelian, peace came in the region and the monastery was rebuilt. A new, golden era began, lasting until the end of the fourteenth century - the period of the invasion of Timurid.

Noravank used to be the main cultural center of Armenia, closely connected with such spiritual and educational institutions as Gladzor University, Tatev Monastery and others. Thanks to the Orbelians, the monastery was at the center of the political events of its time.

The tympanum of the window above the door is decorated with unique images of Father God blessing crucified Christ, and the semicircular tympanum of the front door was decorated with the image of the Mother of God with the baby and the two saints facing her. Inside the narthex, deep niches with khachkars are arranged. All this gave the interior a strict character. All restoration work was carried out by the famous architect, sculptor and miniaturist - Momik. Here you can also visit the Museum of Momik.

Visit this place and enjoy the harmony of nature and architecture.
