Goshavanq Monastery

This beautiful monastery was built by the famous Vardapet (doctor of theology) Mkhitar Gosh. The monastery was originally named Nor Getik (New Getik), and in 1213 it was renamed Goshavank.

Goshavank was one of the famous religious and educational centers of medieval Armenia, where the great Armenian scholar, lawyer and chronicler Mkhitar Gosh (1130-1213), an outstanding Armenian thinker, statesman, author of numerous fables and parables, lived and worked for about 25 years. He is also the author of the first criminal code. He took part in the reconstruction of the monastery. A monastery was later named in his honor.

Visiting the Goshavank Monastery you can understand the structure of the medieval educational system.
