City Shushi

Shushi is the administrative center of the Shushi region of the Artsakh Republic. Shushi was the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh and until the end of the last century played a significant role for the entire region.

In Shushi, ancient objects were discovered dating from the 14th-13th centuries. BC. This is important evidence of an ancient civilization in this territory.

Due to its inaccessible location, Shushi was a defensive zone for the Armenian population of Vanand, living in the Artsakh region of Great Hayk. After its fortification with a protective wall, Shushi also became one of the most important fortresses of the Vanansd Melikdom.

In the vicinity of Shushi, cemeteries with Armenian traditional khachkars of much later dating were found (9th-12th centuries).

Shushi was a major center of Armenian culture, where education and printing were highly developed. In 1827-1920 there were 5 editorial offices in Shushi, which together produced more than 150 books.

During the Battle of Artsakh, in 1991-1992, the city was occupied and served as a military base for the Azerbaijani troops, which bombarded Stelanakert and other settlements from above. On May 6, 1992, Shushi was liberated by the efforts of the Artsakh army. Now the population of Shushi reaches 3,000 people, many of whom are refugees from Sumgait or Baku. To restore the affected city, a new Shushi plan was created in 2017. According to the plan, by 2020 the city will be completely restored as the cultural center of Artsakh.

Be sure to visit this brave city, rich with ancient history, see the church of St. Amenaprkich, as well as exposed ancient objects evidencing the development of local civilization long before our era.
