Dashtadem Fortress

The fortress is located in the southern part of the Dashtadem village. We have no information In written sources about the time of construction of the fortifications complex. The most ancient fortification is the citadel castle. It is assumed that the castle was erected by the Kamsarakans in the 7th century, on the foundation of the construction of the Urartian period.

It is a quadrangular, hall-shaped, tower-fortified three-story structure, erected with pure hewn stones of reddish tuff. The hall is vaulted, the walls are plastered from the inside, the floor is paved with slabs. There were no windows, lighting was carried out by means of erdiks - light openings in the ceiling.

An Arabic inscription has been preserved on the southwestern tower evidences that in 1174 the Aniyan Sultan Ibn Shavur Shattadin strengthened the castle-citadel from the outside with polygonal and round pyramidal towers. Unlike the hall lit by yerdiks, the inner rooms of the towers had windows. A single entrance opened in the southwest corner; the door was made of stone.

Visit this ancient fortress to get familiar with the intricacies of building medieval fortresses.
